ESSENTIAL VISITS
The Place Jean Bart
and the Belfry
A two-minute walk from the Hotel Cargo you can say hello to the city's hero, the French privateer and naval commander, Jean Bart. In the centre of the large esplanade stands his imposing statue. Dating from the middle of the 19th century, the bronze still bears the scars of the battles of the Second World War. A few metres away stands the 15th century Belfry, dominating the town with its superb Gothic architecture. It houses a carillon comprised of 48 bells.
The Maritime & Port Museum
Located in a former 19th century tobacco warehouse, in the heart of the historic district of Dunkirk, this museum retraces the fascinating history of the port from the 17th century until today. The museum also has three moored ships for you to visit.
The beaches of Malo-les-Bains
Belle-Epoque houses, beach huts, white sand and the tempting aroma of couque suisse, our region’s specialty sweet roll… Everything is an invitation to relax and get away from it all in Malo-les-Bains, one of the sites for the evacuation of British troops in 1940. Malo-les-Bains is just 30 minutes on foot or less than 10 minutes by car from the Boutique Hôtel Cargo!
